Pigeon lofts

The landscape of the Tarn et Garonne is characterized by the hundreds of dovecotes that you notice on the top of the hills or next to the farms. They come in various architectural styles: from brick or natural stone or half-timbered, simple or machined, round or angular and built on only one or more posts. Since the Middle Ages, this source of income has yielded the highly valued pigeon manure. The pigeon houses were initially only intended for the nobles. After the French revolution in 1789, the farmers were also allowed to build them.

Fortified cities (Bastides)

The fortified cities, the refuges and the castles are the witnesses to the way the "new cities" developed in the South West of France in the Middle Ages. Characteristic are the covered market square, the street plan in checkerboard pattern, the arcades, the ramparts and walls.
